Ariel's Fanfic Recommendations -

I have rather specific tastes that are probably quite different than most hobbit fic writers and readers of your acquaintance.  I like Book Canon Frodo, angst, very dark themes, deathfics, hurt/comfort and well thought out but dark AUs.  I also like romance, good OCs, and am a connoisseur of good het fic.  You won't find Mary Sues or slash on my page simply because I don't care for either.  That is NOT a political statement any more than me saying 'I don't care for lima beans' is.  I don't disapprove of any type of fic (except maybe RPS fic) and could care less what anyone else reads or writes.  That is their own business - this is mine - but I am very tired of people making scurrilous assumptions based on the simple statement of what I like to read.

Amrunofthesummercountry, A Little Fall of Rain, AU What if, perhaps, Frodo leaving for the Grey Havens was simply a clever metaphor? Frodo's illness gets the better of him. Deathfic.  Frodo, Sam.  PG

Aratlithiel - Duet, Merry and Pippin remember Frodo.  Angst, G.
One of the most stunning and brilliant pieces of fiction I have yet read.  If this does not make you weep, you have no heart.

Aratlithiel - Reckoning  - Sam helps Merry and Pippin to understand.  PG, heartbreaking angst.  A truly haunting and lovely piece that had to be written and only Aratlithiel could have done it such moving justice.  Serious tissue warning.

Aratlithiel, Opus, Summer, 1421, SR, Frodo, Angst (oh, yes,... angst) G.
Ariel's Note:  Be prepared with many tissues for this deceptively short but devastatingly lovely piece.  This author kills me with her brilliance. This truly is one of the finest works I have ever read.

Aratlitiel - Scattered Leaves, October 6th, 1420 S.R., Drama/Angst, Rating:  PG
An astonishing and poetic piece of fiction - evokes a mood that thrills and shakes you.  I cannot praise this piece more highly.

Arien, The Way to Healing, Frodo experiences peace and pain as he is healed in Valinor.  Frodo, Gandalf, various elves, G, General.

Baylor - I Always Know You, A continuation of Of Handkerchiefs and Mushroom Soup, Frodo, Merry, Pippin, Sam, H/C angst, G.

Calime - Eyes to See, Frodo isn't the only one filled with light.  G, Frodo-Sam. Angst.  This is a lovely gapfiller/treatise on the post quest relationship of Frodo and Sam.  It is believable, real and honest and I can't recommend it more highly.  The author has a companion piece called The Chosen Path which examines Arwen's feelings about her gift of the white jewel that is just as lovely.

Cuthalion - Before I Go To Sleep - Frodo / OFC.  This fic IS the written form of the dream I have always had for Frodo ever since I first read his story.  I dreamed of loving him like Lily does and of having him love me like this.  BIGS may occasionally let slip that English is not it's author's first language, but there is, IMHO, no more perfect Frodo tale in all the world.  I am so grateful Cuthalion wrote this.  She answered a very dear wish with it.

Eldalieva - At Last, The last days on Tol Eressea. Frodo, OFCs, Sam, Gandalf.  Deathfic, angst. PG.
I must confess to having a very warm spot in my heart for this fic.  It is one of the few that I read that said something that I wanted to say so completely and well that I felt no need whatsoever to address the subject myself.

Elwen - When I Come Home, Frodo's journey to the West.  Dark themes, Character Death, Frodo, Gandalf, Bilbo, Elrond.

esamen - Boromir in Rivendell, From the viewpoint of Boromir of Gondor, his thoughts on Rivendell, the myth come to life that is 'halfling', elves, Aragorn, Mithrandir et al.  A remarkably mature and well developed take on these characters.  G  The hobbits, the fellowship, Elrond etc.

Frodo Baggins of Bag End, Counterpane, Young Frodo Baggins, growing up at Brandy Hall following his parents' drowning, falls very ill. Rated PG for vivid nightmares and hallucinatory imagery.  Frodo, Bilbo, OCs, Angst/HC  WIP

Gentle Hobbit, The Trial of Frodo Baggins, Frodo is crushed by the knowledge that he was unable to fulfill the Quest without Gollum's intervention. Now, in this Epilogue, Frodo is ready to return home.  All characters, Angst, PG.

Igraine - Beyond the White Towers, It is the long autumn of 1421. How can Frodo and Sam come to terms with their loss? Frodo, Bilbo, Sam, Rosie.  Haremfic, G.
Ariel's Note: This piece is completely astonishing and probably one of the most comforting and brilliant pieces of haremfic I have ever read.  This is a truly beautiful work, and as inspiring as it is well written.  Igraine has always written text that is more poetry than prose and this is no exception.  If you would wish to know why the harem calls those it does, then you must read this fic.

Illyria  - Ink ,- Two vignettes on Frodo, Sam, and stationery.  Book canon, well researched and very touching.  An original approach and an unbelievably good work.  You will not believe her first language is not English.  She writes in it better than MOST writers of fanfic.

Illyria - I Remember The Wind That Night , A lover's memory of Frodo. Frodo/OFC.  PG13. Ariel's Note: Belecuthion started this with a sweet story of the midwife Lily and her infatuation from afar with Frodo Baggins.  It was a quaint and touching story with just the right amount of sense and feeling.  Illyria has taken that simple tale and gone HOG WILD with it with this and several other stories in this 'AU'.  Her tales bring me to tears even when they don't include Lily, but when they do, they are magical.

Illyria - Sun-star, Rose's dead and Sam's no longer "torn in two." But does it mean that he's whole now? Are the Ring-bearers going to be together at last?  Frodo, Sam, Elanor.  Deathfic-? Angst, oh yes... PG.

Inkling - The Terror of Buckland, "I recollect the time when young Frodo Baggins was one of the worst young rascals of Backland."  Farmer Maggot  Frodo, Ezzie, Saradoc, Rorimac, Menegilda, etc. and a host of well rounded OCs.  A new favorite!  Inkling writes in a way that is very reminiscent of my own Buckland tales, so if you liked 'Fear', try this fic.  You won't regret it.

Iolanthe, The Guardians, My love letter to Frodo Baggins, in story form.  Frodo, Bilbo, Various Brandybucks..., PG. WIP
Ariel's Note: This fic is brilliance personified and is to my mind the very essence of a fanfic.  It is completely Tolkien and so well researched and defended that I dare anyone to find its equal.  Guardians is, quite literally, the most wonderful fanfic I have ever read.

Jastaelf - Dark Leaf, The sequel to Leaf and Branch, Legolas, Gandalf, Thranduil, Celeborne, Elrond, Galadriel. Angst, NC-17, WIP

KhazarKhum - The Cursed Queen of Angmar, What if the Witch-King of Angmar had married a Rhudaurian princess? Rated R for Adult Themes., OFC, WiKi, R.  WIP
Ariel's note: This fic barely even mentions hobbits, but it is a stunningly good work of fiction and is very engaging to read.  It has possibly the most splendid female heroine I have read in ages and I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

Larner - A Light on the Way - On the death of the King Elessar and the Lady Arwen. Rated for character deaths and the treatment of bodies. A work in progress. Tissue Warning: deathfic.  I had to include Larner, but it was a trial to figure out which of her astonishing fics to chose.  All of them are wonderful, long and detailed, but, being the angst lover that I am, I am going to chose this fic.  I heartily recommend you don't limit yourself to just one.

Mariole - Too Many Tooks, Frodo takes a trip to Great Smials to get to know Pippin better.  Fortunately for us, (though tryingly for him) he gets to know Pippin's three sisters a lot better!  Humor, smut, and lots (and I do mean LOTS) of sex.  A decided NC-17 offering.  Ariel's Note:  I can't recommend this one more highly!  It is HYSTERICALLY funny and hotter than blue blazes!  I read this thing in one sitting and I have never been so turned on and screamed with such mirth while reading ANY story.  It is THAT good.  Believe the rating, but it is an astonishingly enjoyable piece!

Mechtild, Threshold, From pre- to post- quest, a Frodo romance that explains with painful credibility why Frodo could never have married the love of his life.  Frodo, Bilbo, OFC, various other characters.  NC-17  Ariel's note: an interesting and strangely credible take on the characterizations.  Well written and compelling, and the sex is exceptionally hot.  This story does involve a young Frodo and a much older hobbit lady (Fredregar's mother) so if May/December squicks you, be warned.

Niphredil of Doriath, Child of Buckland, Elegiac, Post-Quest story. Main characters: Frodo and Merry.  PG,
Ariel's Note: This has long been one of my absolute favorites.  Melancholy and touching, you feel this piece more than read it.  It is more an experience than a piece of fanfiction.

Oselle - In Praise of Naps, The simplest comforts are often the best., Frodo, G.

Oselle - The Bedside Reflections of Bell Gamgee, Sam's mother is called upon to look after Frodo, who has fallen ill not long after moving to Bag End. PG

Sally Gardens - The Road Ahead,   Frodo returns to M-e, and tries to live the life left to him., Frodo, Sam, Merry, Rosie, Pippin, OFC. Ariel's Note: I can not praise this story more highly.  If any of you enjoyed my "Promises", you will adore this.

Shadow - Vigil, Frodo and Sam struggle to keep watch…over each other. PG-13

Shirebound, Avalanche, An avalanche on Caradhras leaves Frodo hurt and Pippin in shock. While Pippin tries to regain his shattered courage, Legolas and Boromir begin to realize their importance to the Fellowship.  Angst/HC G.

SilverMoonLady - Cool Waters , Grief can be shattering and revealing, all at once, of strengths and secrets, that lie hid until called.  Warning for character death - and no, not one of the main canon characters, but his grief will affect you.  Ariel's note: I have RARELY read a fic that grieved me more than this one.  Merry grieves Estella and you will ache for him.  Perhaps it is because I have written Estella and came to like her character that this one hit so close to home, but SML can WRITE... you will see.

SilverMoonLady - Moonlight on Summer Leaves , A little piece of history, long lost and now told anew, to whisper to the hearts of the next generation.. Pippin, Paladin, Faramir Took, Legolas.  PG.  Ariel's Note:  A little treasure - this author is a gold mine.  Watch her stuff!

Stormyday - And Left the Tenderness of Tears, Frodo/angst/romance-How does Frodo come to terms with his loss and sacrifices? How do any of us deal with our grief?, OFC, Angst/Romance, NC-17.
